In Vivo and In Vitro Energetics-dependent Biomarkers of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Risk in Patients Before, During and After Surgery

Technion PI, Prof. Yael Yaniv, Rambam co-PI, Dr. Tom Friedman, MD

Overview

Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common form of secondary atrial fibrillation (AF). Despite advancements in prevention and treatment of POAF, it continues to be a significant clinical concern for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, as it is associated with mortality and morbidity. With the ultimate goal of preventing POAF, the proposed research program aims to investigate whether an imbalance between energy supply and demand is a central mechanism contributing to POAF. The program seeks to identify early markers of energetic imbalance during and near the time of surgery and determine if the mechanisms leading to POAF are sex dependent.
